Wildlife Notice
With over 165 acres of preserves, wetlands and lakes in the Pineapple Plantation and the enormous Savannah Preserve nearby, our community has an abundance of varied wildlife which are our neighbors too. Many of our homes back up to the preserves and wetlands which are their home. Some wildlife are familiar: rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, blue jays, cardinals, while others are not: alligators, armadillos, bald eagles, red-shouldered hawks, turtles, black & corn/rat snakes, venomous snakes (diamondback and pygmy rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, coral snakes), coyotes and bobcats. And do not forget the insects (mosquitoes, and fire ants), frogs and toads.
For the most part, we all live in harmony in this community we call home. However, as the wildlife’s land and food supply is shrinking, they have to look for alternatives. Plus, just as flooding and fires affect our homes, the wildlife’s homes are also damaged or unlivable for a period of time. This is why we need to be alert and careful walking around the lakes, common areas and the preserves in addition to your own yards and planting beds. You need to be aware when you are outside and check your surroundings before allowing your children and animals to play or run free. Even when you have your pets on a leash, you must be aware where they are going and make sure it is safe. Use a flashlight at night or early morning when walking the dog to check the area.
Remember, in Florida many of these animals and reptiles are protected and it is illegal to harm or kill them. Use Google or other reference sources to familiarize your family with the wildlife we live with and the related laws.
Lastly, please do not feed the wildlife.
